Facts to Know- Herbal Mixtures INGREDIENTS

Herbs, roots, flowers, shrubs, parts of trees, leaves or seeds are all plant-derived ingredients that were incorporated in the very first medicinal and cosmetic formulas. They provide a vast variety of natural nutrients and homoeopathic potency with different skin-beneficial properties and uses. Containing antioxidants, flavonoids, acids, proteins and many other, botanicals are elemental to creating natural facial skin formulas that manage to heal, treat and keep the skin healthy while addressing diverse needs, preferences and purposes.

Botanical extracts are a concentrated matter in the form of a liquid, powder or infused oil that boost the unique efficiency, properties and benefits of a particular botanical without affecting the overall consistency of a formula.

Essential oils are the most natural and concentrated extracts derived from plants including leaves, flowers, roots and trees. They are versatile in their unique properties and highly concentrate liquids that should always be diluted with a carrier oil when applied topically. They not only add a vast array of scents and aromas, but also help natural healing and rejuvenation, supporting skin health and protecting it from harmful elements.

Oil and water don’t mix well together. Thus, a preferably natural emulsifier and/or wax is needed to make a formula stable. This collection incorporates Montanov 68, Olivem 1000 and carnauba wax that are considered suitable natural cosmetic ingredients. A non-comedogenic emulsifier, Montanov 68 is derived from coconut oil and the tapioca plant. Olivem 1000 is derived from the olive tree plant and works well in a wide variety of formulas. Carnauba is a vegan wax that works as a thickening agent and a natural barrier retaining moisture in the skin.

Carrier oils are versatile ingredients as they can be used to dilute essential oils, added to formulas for their own benefits as well as utilized to infuse botanicals amplifying their potency and uses. Carrier oils, as other natural matters are given a comedogenic rating on a scale from 0 to 5. The lowest scores are given to oils that are least likely to irritate sensitive skin, clog pores or cause breakouts, and are called non-comedogenic. However, they are meant to be used as general guidelines as reactions differ. Not all higher on the comedogenic scale oils provoke acne or are bad for acne-prone skin, specifically when combined in small quantities with other oils or butters. Some can even help reduce acne and the inflammation by balancing the natural oils in the skin. Other carrier oils are beneficial for healing dry skin, clearing up eczema, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is advised to always patch-test formulas with unfamiliar oil, especially those intended for facial care.

Cosmetic butters are typically derived from a plant, bean, kernel, seed or nut and can be used on their own, infused with botanicals or as agent for essential oils. Butters add valuable nutrients, fatty acids and antioxidants to plant-derived formulas and create a thicker consistency. They differ in their melting points, unique properties and benefits and can be effectively applied for different types of skin. Most body butters are solid at room temperature but melt on contact with the skin while hydrating it. Like carrier oils, cosmetic butters are rated on the comedogenic scale with 0 being non-comedogenic and 5 the most likely to clog pores.

Are used to add distinctive color, texture or boost the use and benefits of a formula. Some of them are:
* Plant-derived dyes are commonly used to add color or tint.
* Some, like Aloe Vera, aid in healing and provide relief from skin irritations.
* Natural clays not only add tint to formulas, but they also absorb oils and dirt from skin.
* Honey is a natural humectant with its own antibacterial benefits.
* Oats soothe skin and help with skin inflammation.

Adding a balanced and broad-spectrum preservative is essential to prevent microbe (bacteria, yeast, mold) buildup when combining water solutions with oils and butters in formulas, especially for face. A balanced and broad spectrum means that it guards against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeast and fungi (mold). When needed, this collection incorporates Euxyl® K 903, a gentle liquid preservative developed to be used in cosmetic formulas as well as baby products like wipes. It is an effective preservative and considered an excellent choice for sensitive skin formulas used on the face and eye-area. Euxyl® K 903 is GMO-free and complies with the criteria for natural products. However, it should not be exposed to excessive heat.
